Tucked alongside the historic Schroder House, The Upper Room at Ignatius House extends the retreat center’s mission with a new space for gathering, reflection, and spiritual connection. Overlooking the Chattahoochee River, the three-story, 11,600 square foot addition is designed to quietly immerse retreatants and visitors in its natural surroundings, with expansive glazing that frames the forest and water beyond. The building’s form and materiality draw from the language of the existing chapel, creating a seamless connection between old and new.
Inside, flexible assembly spaces support a range of retreat activities, from small group discussions to larger events and speakers. The second level provides administrative and flexible office space, including three intimate breakout rooms for smaller gatherings. Thoughtfully integrated structure and systems allow the architecture to remain calm and unobtrusive, reinforcing the contemplative experience while expanding the retreat’s capacity to serve.
